it’s insidious of rich people to bask in the envy of the masses because they know it’s not their bank we’re jealous of. it’s what it affords them - their freedom, their security, their rights, their opportunities and ultimately their needs being met in ways that everyone else’s are not. and most of them have achieved this level of comfort through directly exploiting those very same factors in the lives of those ‘beneath’ them. so to act as if jealousy is some sort of indignant reaction to their 'success’, rather than a completely logical response to their selfishness, is hmmm evil
